Reg No: 2006MO46

Graft Vs Host reaction (GVH)

When the graft is mounted on the host, an immune response against the antigens of the host is called GVH reaction,

It occurs in the following conditions:

The graft contains immunocompetent T cells.
The recipient possesses transplantation antigens that are absent in the graft.
The recipient must not reject the graft.

Major clinical features of the GVH reaction in animal are:

Retardation of growth
Emaciation
Diarrhea
Hepatosplenomegaly
Lymphoid atrophy
Anemia
It is called the Runt Syndrome

Examples of situation leading to GVH reaction:

Allograft in a recipient in whom specific immunological tolerance has been induced.
Adult lymphocytes injected into an immunologically deficient recipient. The deficiency can be due to immunosuppression or immaturity.
